The Burton Cup was a trophy competed for on an annual basis between Tynemouth RC and Tyne ARC. First awarded and raced for in 1930 and believed to have been presented by Major Burton of the Tynemouth Garrison based at Tynemouth Castle. The cup was not a particularly attractive one and tradition was that it would never be cleaned on the inside. Last raced for in the 1970s and won by Tynemouth, it was placed in the Cumberland Arms, Tynemouth and was on display for many years there. | |||
Due to the prize not being competed for in many years and combined with a refit of the pub, the cup was lost. Although efforts were made to locate it again, the then Manager of the pub had no knowledge of its whereabouts. It was believed to have been thrown out by the contractors but we shall never know. A sad ending to a tradition. |
