18th January 1899
The Sunderland Daily Echo reported:
The North Hylton Rowing Club accept the challenge of the South Hylton Rowing Club for a supper on any convenient date. Tomkinson Wilkinson.

and one week later the teams were announced: South Hylton Rowing Club v. North Hylton Rowing Club - South Hylton: Daniels, Gray Stothard, Spoors, King, Fulcher, Heron, 'Ridley' Broad, Daniels, and Talbot; reserve, Potts. North Hylton: Oliver, Tomkinson, Wilkinson, Brown, Shaw, Trett, Brown, Trench, Riley, Bell, and Bartley ; reserve, Molan.
