The Newcastle 900 event was a one-off event to celebrate 900 years since the founding of the city of Newcastle. Oxford and Cambridge crews came along to compete in the event held through the bridges in the city centre, and a separate handicap event for various boat classes were held. The winner of the Sprint Eights handicap was Cambois RC.
