In 1950, Mr. Stan Turner, a master at the Johnston School, requested permission to use the club boats at Durham ARC on one afternoon a week – initially this was refused as “any form of dual control in the Club was undesirable”, but later in the year Johnston school boys started rowing at the Club.

In 1999, at the request of Colin Brown , ARA Coaching and Development Officer the club started a pilot scheme with the Durham Johnston School Boat Club to link schools and clubs by taking ergos into the schools to introduce rowing. This pilot became the ARA’s flagship Young People and Coaching Programme “Project Oarsome”
