City of Newcastle Rowing Club

The short-lived City of Newcastle Rowing Club was formed in the 1970s as a result of a few Tyne ARC members merging with other senior rowers in the region and creating what aspired to be a high-level competitive club. They purchased an ex Cambridge Boat Race eight and agreed terms to use the former Newcastle Polytechnic BC premises, located adjacent to the Tyne ARC premises. This did not go down well with Tyne ARC and there was some animosity for a few years. In time, tensions eased, the membership numbers of City of Newcastle reduced and the two Clubs merged into the Tyne Rowing Club, dropping the word "Amateur" in an appeasement to all concerned and all boats were transferred into the ownership of the "new" Club.
