A report "Aquatics on the Tyne 1870" reports: George Wakefield, South Shields RC’s coach is a professional of the second rank. He appears in the NDC in 1877 as coach to a Tyne RC amateur sculler, where his coaching skills and experience are favourably remarked upon.
