The Northumberland County Amateur Rowing Association was the umbrella organisation for all clubs with the county of Northumberland. The County ARA organised the Tyne Head and the County Eights. To gain a County 'cap' was an honour for any member of an associated club and competition to gain selection for the 'county boat' was keen.

Some of the prime movers in the association were Peter Thompson, Jim Nisbet, Russell Kernahan and Kevin Flannery.

Unfortunately, support for the county events waned and the association was dissolved in the 1990s.
