Queen Elizabeth High School started rowing out of Hexham Boat Club's premises at Tyne Green, Hexham in the mid-1970s. Upon the arrival of Chris Grabham from an 8 year stint in Canada at Calgary Schools, he took up a position of English Master at Queen Elizabeth High School. The decision was taken in 1980 to break away from Hexham Boat Club and become established as a separate club and so QEHS Boat Club was founded. Its most significant and and successful rower is probably Matthew Wells who became a World Champion.
