Gateshead and District RC were located on the south side of the River Tyne. The club had some famous names amongst their number and one crew especially, that competed at Durham Regatta in 1914 consisting of James Renforth (Jnr.), W. Renforth, John Renforth, S. Renforth and cox W. Renforth.

The Club also entered Durham Regatta in 1910.

Tyne United Rowing Club was founded in 1946 to provide a home for the remnants of the Empire, Hawthorn, Gateshead & District and Walker & Wallsend clubs.
