Bell's Life reported:
Anthony Scott of Willington Quay and James Fawcett of South Shields rowed from the High level Bridge to the High Elswick Gangway for £50 and there was a great deal of interest manifested in the affair. Scott was the non-favourite but he suffered a most undoubted defeat.
