John Coulson was a professional sculler from Penshaw.

Bell's Life reported: An open boat race between John Coulson of Pensher and John Orrick of Low Walker, for £15 a side, was decided on the Wear on Saturday. The betting was 6 to 4 on Orrick, who had the south side, and who immediately after the start assumed the lead. Coulson gamely struggled on against defeat, but without avail and Orrick ultimately won by seven lengths.
