Bell's Life reported:
There was a match arranged on the Wear for a small stake between James Lumsden and T. Swinburn, who had just previously contended in Marshall's Handicap on the Wear. Lumsden won easily. Higgins of Shadwell, who had been matched with Blackburn for £400 long before his race with Boyd had been decided, had to meet this promising young sculler in exactly a fortnight after the race where he experienced such a series of disasters.
