William Pye

William Pye was a professional sculler from Willington, on the River Tyne.

Bell's Life reported: On Saturday afternoon, a scullers race between George Cook of Sunderland and William Pye of Wllington-on-Tyne, took place over a half mile course on the River Wear, for £5 a side. Notwithstanding that Pye had the southern berth. which gave him the benefit of the tide and the benefit of the bend in the river, Cook (the favourite) at once took a substantial lead, but when in front fouled a piece of timber, which spoiled all chance of his winning and his opponent finished alone.
